Alternate title: Gentrification, Before Our Eyes
Adams Morgan, the neighborhood in which I grew up, is located in Northwest Washington, D.C. Before me were the Nacotchtank, colonial-era wealthy Western European immigrants, middle-class white Americans, Black Americans, Salvadorans, and Ethiopians. Who will be here next?
This series explores the complex questions of belonging and ownership: Who can truly claim this neighborhood as their own? Does land ever really belong to anyone? How does a decade of increasing gentrification play into this?
As I documented the rapidly changing landscape of this neighborhood, where my family has lived since the 1980s, I reflected on these questions. Through my lens, I aim to capture the essence of a neighborhood in flux and provoke thought about the past, present, and future of this diverse and dynamic community.
